Sorcerer's Hat

To mark the centenary of the birth of Walt Disney, Walt Disney World created a new park icon for the Disney-MGM Studios. It stands obscuring the replica of Mann's Chinese Theatre - a giant Sorcerer Mickey Hat. Situated at the terminus of Disney-MGM Studios' Hollywood Boulevard, the Sorcerer Mickey Hat.

scrapes the sky at 122 feet. The new structure replaced the faade of Great Movie Ride as the new icon of the theme park.

The icon was supposedly built to symbolize the magic of show business and the entertainment wizardry of Disney. The new icon was formally   introduced on September 28, 2001, as Walt Disney World commenced its so-called 100 Years of Magic Celebration.

Sorcerer Mickey Hat joins the likes of Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom, Spaceship Earth at Epcot and The Tree of Life at Disneys Animal Kingdom. Each of these upholds Disneys tradition of erecting icons for their respective theme parks.

Complete with the tell-tale decorations of glittering moon and star shapes, the structure is shaped like   the gilded, blue wizard hat worn by Mickey in the animated musical, Fantasia. A disembodied giant Mickey hand is   apparently tipping the Hat, which rests on two stylized Mickey ears. Located underneath the structure is a major Disney pin station.

The Hat, which weighs leviathan 156 tons, is chiefly fashioned from fiberglass. Binding the   100-  feet structure all together are approximately 13,493 bolts; 26,986 washers; and 17,000 feet (or 57 football field) of underground utility piping.

Both the Hat and ears are founded on a compact, solid foundation that used a very   concentrated amount of concrete enough to cover the length of a football field. Within the Hat, the interior space measures nearly 60,000 cubic feet. Allegedly, the Hat can hold 444,744 gallons of water.

The Hat is painted with a specially crafted technique known as chameleon paint. In turn, the paint shifts into different shades from many angles as guests move around it.

The structures ears come with a feature known as Light Ribbons. This new   special effect allows the ears to change color and correspondingly sparkle with internal pixie dust lighting.
